Learning Pool, the specialist in e-learning services in the public sector, has signed an agreement with the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) to develop public sector procurement products internationally starting for the next five years.

The partnership will start offering products in South Africa and neighbouring regions early next year.

The agreement, signed yesterday at Learning Pool’s offices in Clarendon Street, was announced by Director Paul McElvaney and welcomed by MP Mark Durkan.

Foyle MP MLA Mark Durkan said “The signing of this contract is a real milestone for Learning Pool and marks a step change in their already impressive progress over the past three years.

It is proof of what a Derry-based company can achieve despite the effects of the worldwide economic downturn and reflects positively on everyone involved with the company.”

At the heart of the global training deal is an entry level e-learning programme for public sector practitioners on procurement best practice.

The course will be endorsed by CIPS, the world wide industry leader dedicated to promoting good practice in the purchasing and supply profession.

Paul McElvaney said “The agreement in South Africa is the outcome of a decision to explore business opportunities beyond the United Kingdom, especially in nations that have public services influenced by UK tradition and procedures.

“Our suite of public sector e-learning content and our expertise is this area has made Learning Pool the leading provider of e-learning to the public sector in the UK.

“We’re looking forward to developing complementary products with CIPS to help meet the very real challenges facing the public sector internationally. “

Chris Gallagher, Director of Customer Solutions at CIPS commented “Effective public sector procurement is the number one priority for many developing countries.

“By offering a web based service, CIPS and Learning Pool will be able to reach tens of thousands of individuals in the next few years, increasing capacity and improving public services.

“We are excited about the relationship with Learning Pool whose credentials in the public sector are unrivalled and to be admired.”

Donal Durkan from Invest Northern Ireland, the local regional development agency said “The suite of innovative products that the team in Derry has pioneered clearly has significant potential in the global marketplace, especially in nations wishing to improve the skills, capability and competence of their public services.

“This is a developing market which Learning Pool is now perfectly positioned to exploit.”

Learning Pool was set up in 2006 and now employs over 40 people both in Derry and across the UK.

Speaking at the launch, Learning Pool director Mary McKenna paid tribute to the team saying “Our team is highly motivated, hard working and dedicated to making Learning Pool a real success.

“Our announcement is testament to their commitment and innovation and together we look forward to building an even more exciting business in the next few years.”
