What animal best describes the approach to learning in your organisation?
Elephant was the response from one of the delegates at Lincolnshire’s New Ways of Learning Workshop on 8th December, featuring Clive Shepherd and Laura Overton from Towards Maturity.
Now, the analogy of an elephant can mean two completely different things. Does it mean that the elephant (aka the learning approach) is so clumsy that it cannot turn a corner? Or is it that young elephants are led by the older elephants into a new land of discovery. You can decide.
On Course for the Towards Maturity Model
Using the Towards Maturity Model (based on benchmark data from over 700 businesses), Clive and Laura aim to help organisations build a framework to embed e-learning successfully in their organisations. Lincolnshire County Council’s workshop was delivered as part of the Next steps workshop series.
Andy Brookes, Head of Organisational Change with Lincolnshire County Council, opened his presentation by describing Lincolnshire’s e-learning approach as a flock of birds – each bird has to communicate with the 7 birds around it.
Just Google It!
Enthusiasm is a great motivator, declared Councillor Barry Singleton. With great passion, Councillor Singleton, described how benefits of e-learning can be a rewarding process for learners.
He experienced the future generation of e-learners when his 7-year old grand-daughter told him to ‘Just Google It’ when he was looking for a restaurant recently.
Clive Shepherd believes social media is a string to the bow of an organisation’s learning culture:
The Towards Maturity Model was introduced by Laura Overton. As part of the model, Laura can help organisations show the tangible commercial benefits if adopting e-learning. E-learning is far from being a white elephant:
An energizing day was had by all, and congratulations to Wendy Henry from Lincolnshire County Council for organising such a successful event.

This was a really good event. Clive and Laura smoothly lead the Lincs CC through discussions around barriers and benefits of e-learning to create a council wide list of actions that will help move things forward in a joined up way.
I was impressed at how Lincs had managed to get 60 managers in one room and they all seemed very enthusiastic about the use of learning technologies. The Union Learning Reps were very positive and contributed well to the whole event.
I was seriously impressed by this event. It was a really good example of the considered way in which Andy Brookes and his team (Wendy Henry, Michelle Hallam-Wren, etc) have approached the task of embedding elearning in to the organisation’s culture.
Fab.
Thanks Chris – it wsa good to have you and Lisa join us for this important initiative. As you know this is just the start of our journey and we look forward to sharing our progress in 2010!
