What’s in a name?

swimming-pool1As some folks may know I am a bit partial to a kebab and it struck me of late that the only place to buy kebabs is from a kebab shop whereas other food, and some non-food, outlets have different categories.

Let me explain.

Kebabs and Fish & Chips come from shops; the kebab shop and the fish shop respectively.  I hail from Bradford and I don’t know if it’s a local thing but when we get a curry it comes from a curry house, never a curry shop.

And then we have some outlets referred to as bars.

In bars you can by Sushi, Tapas or Noodles but strangely I have never come across a curry bar or a fish bar.  Bars are an odd outlet as there are two other products that always seem to be sold in bars, namely Nails and Heels.

How did this happen?  Why is it that certain foods and products seem to need a certain suffix on their retail outlets, and slightly more worrying is the fact that I am even concerning myself with the issue.

Are there others that I have missed?  Do you care?

And what about us – what about Learning Pool?

Well the only other pools that come mind are also about sharing.

There is the car pool where people share the journey to work and, obviously, the swimming pool where people share the water, sticking plasters and verrucas.

A coincidence? I think not.
