Library staff have to have the skills to deal with
- internal Library Management Systems (SirsiDynix WorkFlows)
- intermediate systems between the library system and the public (NetLoan - for self-service Internet use)
- Office and Internet use (for research, stock purchase, etc)
This is a place for updates on the state of internet access on People's Network and WiFi network at Cardiff Central Library
This is a pilot version attempting to extend the possibilities of Learning Pool and other online resources.
Regular staff can use this area as a refresher, or to discuss changes.
The staff induction module is intended to familiarise new staff with the various screens they may see on library PCs, and you can find that in the New Staff section. (see below)
Although NetLoan is fairly self-explanatory (a self-service booking system for the public) staff still get asked for help in using it.
The best way to learn may be to log into NetLoan as a member of the public. You will have the public's eye view of the system, and can experiment with what is and is not possible - the various different ways of finding available time slots and making bookings, etc.
After that, log in as a Staff member and look at the extra functions that you have.
Through our online catalogue the public can access many research resources (for free) to which Cardiff Libraries subscribe. Each one deserves a section of its own, along with tips on how to use it, and what it is best suited for, etc.
Look in online catalogue for e-Reference
In addition - direct access to the resources held in all libraries has increased, through the development of Ask A Librarian services like:
People's Network - Enquire - which uses Questionpoint (24/7 ask a librarian)

Such interactive possibilities may change the way of working, and the job description of library workers in the future. This interactive approach is implied in the phrase "Library 2.0" (see Wiki notes on recent CLIC event, now posted on The Knowledge Bank, also accessible from Home Page, web1)
Site for all Welsh Libraries - Library Wales
Ask Cymru - another site with 'real people' answering queries within 48 hours.
A-Z of UK Public Librariescompiled by Sheila and Robert Harden
This is intended to separate the New Staff Induction course from the general staff 'course'
As WorkFlows is only available to staff - an enrolment key is necessary to access this part of the site.
Don't worry that this system calls it a 'course' - you are not committing yourself to anything more than reading a newsletter.

Although you might find it worthwhile to eventually register (using your council email address) and explore the other resources in the Library section - or even the whole e-learning zone...
These tips, FAQs (some general, some library specific) and recommendations were originally sent out by email to branches and departments, but are gathered here for future reference.
All feedback, corrections and suggestions for future content, welcome.
